Dogue de Bordeaux
Origin: France
Year Recognized By AKC: 2008
Breed History & Job Description: The oldest French dog breed, the Dogue de Bordeaux (“Mastiff of Bordeaux”) was around even before France was France. In ancient times, when France (then called Gaul) was a province of the Roman Empire, DDBs were developed as ferocious war dogs and gladiators. During their long history they also worked as cattle drovers, drafters, and guardians. The breed was virtually unknown in the United States until 1989, when a DDB costarred with Tom Hanks in the police comedy “Turner & Hooch.”
